Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a $100 billion industry that offers individuals a way to start a legitimate home-based business with a nominal investment. Typically, the business is started on a part-time basis and if desired, can evolve into a full-time occupation replacing 100% or more of a person’s earned income.
MLM has a rich history, dating back to at least the 1700’s when Yankee peddlers in New England would travel from home to home selling their goods. The late 1800’s saw new companies employing door-to-door salesmen to distribute bibles, books, spices, remedies, perfumes, and tonics, just to name a few. During this era, The California Perfume Company, now known as Avon was founded. In the early 1900’s, The Fuller Brush debuted, along with the emergence of vacuum cleaner companies like Electrolux and encyclopedia companies like Britannica and World Book.
The modern era of MLM came to being post World War II in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. With the advent of subdivisions, neighborhoods flourished with their own sense of community. Belly to Belly marketing was coined as marketers sold their goods to friends and neighbors. Customers soon became marketers so they could buy products at wholesale prices.
Is multi-level marketing a pyramid scheme? According to the US justice system—no. In 1979, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged that Amway and its multi-level structure was an illegal pyramid. The court ruled in Amway’s favor and deemed that their multi-level marketing structure was valid and legal and that it presented a legitimate business opportunity.
Today, some of the largest corporations in America are MLM companies, including Amway, Avon, and Herbalife, to name a few. Many of these same companies are publicly traded on the major stock exchanges. In 2002, Warren Buffet’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, purchased Pampered Chef and in 2009, a real estate mogul purchased Ideal Health, an MLM health company based on the east coast.
Economist Paul Zane Pilzer predicts that between 2006 and 2016, 10 million new millionaires will be created by individuals who are in direct selling, technology, home-based business, product distribution, or an emerging market like wellness. Other experts such as Brian Tracy, Robert Kiyosaki, Paul Zane Pilzer, Jim Rohn, and Warren Buffet openly talk about the merits of the MLM industry and in fact, encourage people to consider it.
